Profile: 9mm Urethane

James (Revolution): 9MM Urethane, who is involved and what are you about?

Spencer SlemendaSpencer (9mm): Chris shields, Jordan dale , Jon Murakami and myself. Chris rides for 9mm and is running sales. Jordan and Jon ride for 9mm. Well I have worked in the industry for a while now and thought it was time for a change. the company itself is just about making the best products we can , pushing the limits of design and hooking people up who support what we believe in. for me its another way of expressing my creativity while supporting a industry that I love.

James (Revolution): It's unique in itself to start a wheel company, what inspired you to start 9MM?

Spencer (9mm): I wanted to start a company that would inspire a new generation of skaters and basically put a twist in what the industry is becoming. I guess not being in with the in crowd and living in a smaller eastern town has its advantages for viewing rolling a little different. I have been looking at the industry from the outside and I feel that it has focused in on the wrong things. 9mm has dedicated itself to making better products. I guess I'm just sick of seeing the same old thing just being repackaged with a different face plastered on the side.

James (Revolution): 9MM is about producing quality wheels. You used new materials that are more expensive to produce, like a different type of core, and colored urethane. There is a reason for it, tell us about that?

Spencer (9mm): The wheels are dual durometer wheels. what that means is that the core is a hard as hell urethane and bonds chemically to the outer softer urethane rather than relying on a mechanical bond to hold the core and outer together. Our cores are also slightly softer than others so it will also help dampen some of the vibrations and not crack or de-core. We are more destructive than ever towards our products and its about time that we start thinking of making something better, even if it costs a little more. It was no discussion at all about colored urethane it was time for it to be revived and it looks great with our clear core.

James (Revolution): What wheels, and other products will premier in your first line?

Spencer (9mm): The first line is very simple two 56mm wheels. one that is 89a and the other 92a also an abec 5 bearing that is rubber shielded and packed with a heavy grease. the grease helps so you don't have to take care of your bearings so much, we all know that we don't take care of anything we skate. we will be releasing a t-shirt and a hat or two also, but my theory is you should ride our wheels first then buy our clothes and stuff not vice versa.

James (Revolution): The 56mm/92a wheel tailors to a specific purpose, tell us about that wheel.

Spencer (9mm): We decided to produce a 92a because summer is coming. wheels tend to get a little softer during the hot months and we wanted a wheel that would hold up better under the hot summer street conditions. plus a lot of kids are skating anti rocker these days so this again allows the wheel to hold up a little better and if you skate a flat setup you won't stick as much.

James (Revolution): The 9MM team is comprised on some impressive skaters. Who are they, and how did they become part of 9MM?

Spencer (9mm): The team right now is Chris Shields, Jordan Dale, Jon Murakami. They all possess a spark that I liked. They all just fit with what I had envisioned to start a wheel company off with. I can't really describe it but it works well. The main principal of 9mm is to hook up those who might not get all the crazy hype and exposure. So our team will be growing as the company grows because there are so many who I think deserve it.

James (Revolution): What are your plans for this year? What can we expect to see from 9MM?

Spencer (9mm): This year we will focus on the wheels and bearings. That's it no big clothing line , no gimmicks no big marketing campaign or other crap to get in the way of our wheels.

James (Revolution): 9MM is setting a new standard for wheels, soon skaters will have the chance to experience what you're created, and things can only grow. Who do you want to thank for getting you to this point where you are today?

Spencer (9mm): Jennifer that's my girl for all the inspiration & love she has given me. My family, God for my creativity, the team, especially Chris for all the hard work. I can't forget Kevin, Rick and Ann you took a chance on me thanks. Cory & Joe @ RB. All of those companies and riders who will continue to inspire new ones.

To the long list of people who doubted me ~ F#CKYOU
